THE SKETCHBOOK

The first range.
Different characters.

From pressed leaves to tailoring, folded fabric and collected charms. A developing range, shown through the design sketches.
Materials, fit and details are still being explored.

Four illustrated views of Leaves, Fitted six-panel crown; flat peak; autumn leaves enclosed within clear plastic; dark panel bindings.

01 / LEAVES

Autumn, held between transparent layers.

Leaves and fragments are squeezed between clear layers across the crown and peak. Irregular shapes, varied sizes and open transparent areas create depth without loose foliage projecting from the cap.

Transparent panel and dark seams

LEON MORRISON / THE FOUNDER

Style was
always around me.

Leon Morrison, founder and designer of Cap’em, wearing a mustard knitted hat and blue jacket

I grew up in Huddersfield with parents who had come from Jamaica as children. Reggae, soul, funk, R&B and jazz were part of life at home. I loved dancing, and I was sketching and styling clothes while I was still young.

My grandmother kept a room full of hats. My grandfather seemed always to have a trilby or a cap. Those memories stayed with me, along with a question about who gets to wear which hat, and why.

Fashion and hair took me through London, Paris and New York, before I built a career in film, design and broadcasting. My eye kept returning to texture, movement and the person inside the frame.

When I shaved off my dreadlocks, caps became part of how I dressed every day. I kept wishing for more choice in their shape, colour and attitude. Cap’em comes from that wish. These days, Clapham and Brixton are home, and part of the mix too.

THE SOUNDTRACK

Music in the room.
Movement in the clothes.

Reggae, soul and R&B, with funk and jazz in the mix. The music and style of the 1970s, 80s and 90s sit behind the work: the ease of a dance floor, the care taken over an outfit, the freedom to make it your own.

Imagined black-and-white scene of adults dancing in tailoring and hats
Dance, dress and a sense of ease.
Warmly lit turntable, plain record sleeves, green cotton cap and worn speaker
The soundtrack, the texture, the everyday details.
Imagined sepia portrait of a Caribbean church lady wearing a large sculptural Sunday hat, with a little boy holding her hand outside a church
Sunday best, hand in hand.
Imagined black-and-white 1970s South London street scene, with Jamaican rude boys and their hats in the foreground and mods and punks in the background
Rude-boy style on a South London street.

Original imagined visual studies inspired by the music, church hats and street style behind Cap’em.

Start with the shape.

A crown, peak and profile worth looking at from every angle.

Let the fabric speak.

Folds, seams, stitching and layers give each cap its own character.

Keep the person in view.

More ways to dress as yourself, with room for different moods.
